The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith

Currently, I read The Price of Salt (later republished as “Carol”) by Patricia Highsmith, which is a lesbian pulp fiction novel set in the 1950s. There is currently a movie directed by Todd Haynes, starring the wonderful Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara as Carol and Therese, respectively. Having watched the movie in cinemas, I was very keen to read the story behind it.

It is told in Therese’s perspective, who’s a young aspiring set designer working part time in a department store during Christmas. She meets Carol, an older and richer soon-to-be-divorcee, shopping for toys for her daughter.

The paragraph above is the first time time that Therese sees Carol. If you enjoy a very poignantly conscious and all consuming internal romance, not to mention the radicalism of LGBT+ main characters, you would very much enjoy this novel.
